Κλασσικές ταινίες και σκηνοθέτες στην κινηματογραφική ιστορία 80 ετών.
Το Σωματείο Αμερικανών Σκηνοθετών γιόρτασε τα 80 χρόνια από την ίδρυσή του (1936) και δημοσίευσε μια λίστα με τις καλύτερα σκηνοθετημένες ταινίες των τελευταίων 80 χρόνων. Τα μέλη που συμμετείχαν στην ψηφοφορία ήταν συνολικά 2.189 (13,7% του συνολικού ποσοστού των μελών), ενώ δεν αποκλείστηκαν σκηνοθέτες που ανήκουν στο Σωματείο.
Σε ανακοίνωσή της η DGA δηλώνει: «Είναι αλήθεια ότι υπάρχουν επιλογές με τις οποίες διαφωνείς και άλλες ταινίες που θα είχες συμπεριλάβει, αλλά αυτό είναι το κομμάτι της διασκέδασης». Προφανώς τα μέλη θα ήθελαν να προλάβουν τυχόν αντιδράσεις, οι οποίες βέβαια δεν έλειψαν από τους κινηματογραφόφιλους.
Το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό των ταινιών είναι αμερικανικής παραγωγής αφήνοντας εκτός αξιόλογες παραγωγές του ευρωπαϊκού κινηματογράφου. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι στη λίστα συμπεριλαμβάνεται μόνο μία γυναίκα σκηνοθέτης, η Kathryn Bigelow, για την ταινία The Hurt Locker, ενώ είναι εμφανής η απουσία καινούργιων χρονολογικά ταινιών, με εξαίρεση το Avatar (2009) και το Birdman (2014).
Οι πέντε καλύτερες ταινίες, όπως ψηφίστηκαν από την Ένωση Αμερικανών Σκηνοθετών, είναι ο Νονός του Φράνσις Φορντ Κόπολα, Ο Πολίτης Κέιν του Όρσον Γουέλς, ο Λόρενς της Αραβίας του Ντέιβιντ Λιν, η ταινία του Στάνλει Κιούμπρικ 2001: Η Οδύσσεια του Διαστήματος και η Καζαμπλάνκα του Μάικλ Κερτίζ.
